10 Super Eagles Stars Arrive in Rabat for World Cup Playoffs

By peter.

A bright Sunday afternoon in Rabat, Morocco, saw the Super Eagles open their training camp at the Rive Hotel. This marks the start of a critical week in Nigeria’s quest to return to the FIFA World Cup stage.

Ten players arrived first, led by Fulham stars Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, and Samuel Chukwueze. They were joined by Tolu Arokodare (Wolves) and Olakunle Olusegun (Nizhny Novgorod). By evening, Wilfred Ndidi (Beşiktaş), Moses Simon (Paris FC), and captain William Troost-Ekong (Al-Kholood) checked in. Later, Benjamin Fredericks (Dender) and Chidozie Awaziem (Nantes) brought the total to 10.

The full 24-man squad, finalized by coach Eric Chelle on Saturday, will arrive soon. This is no routine camp — it’s Nigeria’s final shot at 2026 World Cup qualification.

High Stakes in Rabat

  • Thursday, Nov 13: Nigeria vs Gabon
  • Sunday, Nov 16: Final vs Cameroon or DR Congo (if victorious)
  • March 2026: Intercontinental playoff in Mexico

The winner claims Africa’s 10th and final spot in the expanded 48-team World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Nigeria hasn’t qualified since 2018. Their last appearance ended in heartbreak against Argentina. Now, the path is tough — but the team is ready.

Chelle’s Squad: Experience Meets Fresh Energy

Coach Eric Chelle made smart changes after last month’s wins over Lesotho and Benin. Those victories placed Nigeria second in their group and earned this playoff spot.

Key returnees:

  • Maduka Okoye (Udinese) — back in goal
  • Chidozie Awaziem — strengthens defense
  • Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge) — controls midfield
  • Chidera Ejuke (Sevilla) — adds creativity

Notable omissions: Felix Agu, Terem Moffi, Christantus Uche.

With stars like Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray), Ademola Lookman (Atalanta), and Ndidi, this squad has talent and grit. They remember missing Russia 2018 and the struggles at AFCON 2021. Now, they fight with purpose.

Nigeria: Favorites, But No Room for Error

Ranked highest in this four-team playoff, Nigeria is the favorite. But Gabon, powered by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, won’t be easy. Cameroon and DR Congo are proven giant-killers.

Coach Chelle demands discipline, focus, and clinical finishing. One mistake could end the dream.

A Nation Holds Its Breath

From Abuja to Lagos, Port Harcourt, and beyond, millions are watching. The green-white-green flags are ready. The Super Eagles carry more than a team — they carry 200 million hopes.

Ten players are in camp. Fourteen more arrive soon. Training starts now.

When the whistle blows on Thursday, Nigeria’s World Cup fate hangs in the balance.

The camp is calm. The mission is clear. The roar of a nation is coming.

Let’s fly, Eagles. 🦅✈️
