The Enugu State Police Command has announced that 13 males have been apprehended in connection with an ambush attack on its personnel in the Akpakume community of the Udi Local Government Area. The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, detailed that the confrontation unfolded on Monday during an operation to detain suspects tied to charges of conspiracy, illegal firearms possession, and cult-related activities.
In a press release released on Wednesday, Ndukwe stated, “In the early hours of November 3, 2025, Enugu State Police Command operatives detained 13 male suspects and seized one locally fabricated single-barrel shotgun in Akpakume community, Udi LGA.
” He recounted that the suspects and their accomplices had set a trap, unleashing a barrage of gunfire on the advancing police unit, which wounded several officers and riddled their patrol vehicle with bullets.
“The team countered with overwhelming force, compelling most attackers to scatter into the bush with serious ballistic wounds. During the arrests, one homemade single-barrel shotgun was retrieved,” Ndukwe continued. The spokesperson added that stray bullets fired by the attackers damaged civilian vehicles nearby and shattered the vehicle’s headlights.
On Tuesday, CP Mamman Giwa, the Commissioner of Police, personally led a group of senior officers to Akpakume to witness the devastation caused by the perpetrators firsthand. Ndukwe noted that the inspection revealed deliberate vandalism by the thugs, including the demolition of homes, commercial outlets, and assorted properties, alongside the slaughter of community livestock and trampling of farmlands.
“Initial probes indicate these offenses stem from an ongoing rift within the local community.”
The fugitives have been relentlessly pursued by CP Giwa, who has also urged peaceful citizens to maintain composure and continue with their daily activities unaffected. He said that the command would try everything to catch and prosecute everyone who was responsible for the assault and other crimes in the area.
