Maurizio Cattelan, the troll-king of modern art who once sold a duct-taped banana for $6M, just dropped the ultimate flex: “America”, a fully functional 18-karat gold toilet, hammered at Sotheby’s New York on Nov 18 for a jaw-dropping $12.1 million (starting bid $10M).
The 223-pound throne was installed in the auction house for pre-sale viewing – but no sitting allowed. “We don’t want people sitting on the art,” said Sotheby’s expert David Galperin.
Cattelan’s deadpan explanation: “Whatever you eat — a $200 lunch or a $2 hot dog — the results are the same, toilet-wise.”
Translation: Billionaire poop still stinks.
Same guy behind “Comedian” (the banana that rotted and got eaten, forcing three replacements).
Art or the greatest middle finger to wealth ever cast in solid gold? You decide.
The buyer remains anonymous, but somewhere tonight there’s a bathroom worth more than most people’s houses.
