“97% of Listeners Can’t Tell AI‑Generated Music from Human‑Made Tracks

By Peter.

A new global survey reveals that 97% of listeners can no longer tell the difference between music made entirely by artificial intelligence and songs crafted by human artists.

Conducted by polling firm Ipsos for France-based streaming platform Deezer, the study asked 9,000 people across eight countries—Brazil, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United States—to identify AI-generated tracks among audio clips. The results, released on Wednesday, showed an overwhelming failure to distinguish the two.

“Ninety-seven percent could not distinguish between music entirely generated by AI and human-created music.” — Deezer

The survey ran from October 6 to 10, 2025.

Growing Listener Unease

More than half of respondents said they felt uncomfortable not knowing whether the music they were hearing was AI or human-made.

Broader concerns about AI’s impact on music also emerged:

  • 51% believe AI will flood platforms with low-quality content.
  • Nearly two-thirds fear it will erode creativity in the industry.

“The survey results clearly show that people care about music and want to know if they’re listening to AI or human-made tracks or not.” — Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer

AI Music Is Booming on Streaming

Deezer reports a sharp rise in fully AI-generated tracks on its platform:

  • In January 2025, 1 in 10 daily streams were AI music.
  • By October, that jumped to over 1 in 3 — nearly 40,000 AI tracks streamed per day.

Call for Transparency

A resounding 80% of respondents want fully AI-generated music clearly labeled on streaming services.

Deezer is currently the only major platform that systematically tags 100% AI-created content for users.

The Velvet Sundown Wake-Up Call

The issue exploded into public view in June 2025 when a mysterious band called The Velvet Sundown went viral on Spotify. Only a month later did they reveal their music was entirely AI-generated. Their top track has now surpassed 3 million streams.

In response, Spotify announced it would encourage artists and labels to adopt a voluntary disclosure code for AI use in production.

The Future of Music?

As AI tools become more sophisticated, the line between human artistry and machine creation is vanishing. Listeners want clarity — and the music industry is racing to adapt.
