On September 26, 2024, UNICEF, in collaboration with the Oyo State Ministry of Information and Orientation, hosted a one-day workshop aimed at enhancing public support for integrated immunization programs, specifically focusing on HPV and non-polio vaccines. The event took place at Plaza De Aruna in Oyo town, bringing together media professionals and stakeholders from various southwestern states, including Edo State.

Titled “Media Orientation on HPV/Non-Polio Supplemental Immunization Integrated Activities,” the workshop aimed to equip journalists with essential information regarding the current landscape of HPV and non-polio viruses in Nigeria.

Participants learned about the risks, symptoms, prevention measures, and the potential for eradication of these viruses.

Mrs. Aderonke Akinola-Akinwole, a Social and Behaviour Change Specialist at UNICEF, highlighted the critical role of the media in vaccination advocacy. She referred to the participants as “the voice that represents the voiceless” and urged them to share the insights gained during the workshop with their audiences.

Akinola-Akinwole stressed the need for sustainable strategies to ensure that children receive vaccinations against various strains of polio.

Mr. Rotimi Babalola, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Oyo State Ministry of Information, emphasized the workshop’s purpose of reinforcing the partnership between the media and UNICEF.

He noted that the event served as a platform for UNICEF to request media support in raising awareness and improving community knowledge and attitudes regarding the viruses. Babalola also mentioned the importance of dispelling myths and misconceptions related to UNICEF’s interventions.

Participants were given the chance to ask questions regarding unclear aspects of the programs, and the workshop also provided an overview of immunization efforts across the participating states.

This initiative by UNICEF highlights the significance of media engagement in addressing vaccine misinformation and ensuring that integrated immunization programs effectively reach diverse populations.

By leveraging media resources, UNICEF aims to communicate vital health information to even the most marginalized groups, helping to alleviate vaccine hesitancy.

Representatives from UNICEF underscored the necessity of continued collaboration between health systems and media outlets to achieve lasting public health advancements.

The event showcased the media’s essential role in educating the public and encouraging long-term improvements in health behaviors. Through ongoing efforts, UNICEF aspires to guarantee that no child in the involved states remains unvaccinated against preventable diseases through integrated immunization programs.

This collaboration between UNICEF and the media represents a significant stride in raising public health awareness across southwestern states and Edo State, paving the way for successful outcomes in the upcoming measles vaccination campaign and other integrated immunization initiatives.
