Alleged Insubordination: Edo Assembly Takes Action, Suspends 18 LGA Chairmen, Vice

The Edo State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of the 18 Local Government Areas LGAs, in Edo State for two months due to alleged insubordination, gross misconduct, and corruption.
This decision was made after the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebolo requested the outright dissolution of the council leaders.
However, the assembly chose to suspend them instead, allowing for an investigation into the allegations.
The suspension is related to the council leaders’ refusal to submit their statements of account within 48 hours, as directed by the governor.
This directive was given in the previous week, and the local government had sought a court order to restrain the governor from carrying out the order.
During the assembly’s plenary session, Hon. Emakhu Isibor Adeh moved a motion to suspend the council leaders, which was seconded by Hon. Donald Okogbe.
In contrast, however, Hon. Asonsere Nicholas Friday countered with a motion arguing that the allegations should not be used against innocent individuals. He emphasized that if there were issues of misconduct and corruption, everybody, can’t be corrupted at the same time.
The counter motion was Seconded by a member representing Oredo East Constituency, Hon. Frank Uyi Omosigho.
In what seems a rowdy session, the majority of the 8th Assembly members took turns to align with the governor’s call, where fewer numbers differed.
However, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian and the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Edeko Maria Omozele, seemed to have different views when they argued that the issue should be referred to the house committee on Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs.
Speaking shortly after various remarks, the speaker, Rt Hon. Blessing Sheriff Agbeku, considered a head count of members for or against.
After the counts, the majority of the assembly members supported the governor’s request, with 14 out of 24 members voting in favor of the suspension.
The heads of the legislative arms of the councils will oversee the running of the councils for the next two months.
