Tinubu renames University of Abuja after ex Head of State Yakubu Gowon
1 min readThe Federal Government-owned University of Abuja (UniAbuja), has been renamed Yakubu Gowon University.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the channge in the name of the University in honour of the former military Head of State, who recently marked his 90th birthday.
Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Monday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by the President.
The Minister noted that the renaming recognizes Gowon’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s unity and his commitment to the country’s progress.
He added that the renaming aligns with President Tinubu’s initiative to honor prominent figures whose legacies have shaped Nigeria’s history and development.
He, however, revealed that the proposal for the renaming will be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal approval.
“This decision reflects the government’s appreciation for the remarkable leadership and service General Gowon provided during a critical time in our nation’s history,” Idris said.
