Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Owo, Owo Local Government Area of the State.
Owo is a student community where Rufus Giwa Polytechnic is located and the home town of late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
The curfew declaration followed cult clashes that have allegedly claimed several lives.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenizer Adeniyan, disclosed this in a statement posted on his social media page on Monday.
“Due to the ongoing violent cult clashes and security disturbances in Owo, which have led to loss of lives, the Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has ordered a dawn-to-dusk curfew in the town, till further notice,” he stated.
Adeniyan noted that all residents are required to stay indoors during the curfew.
He added that only essential services, such as hospitals, emergency services, and law enforcement, will be allowed to work during the curfew.
Sources in the town revealed that the latest clash could be linked to a prolonged dispute that dated back to over a decade, during which several residents lost their lives in gang clashes.
The incident has thrown the student community into mourning, with residents expressing grief and concern over the growing insecurity in the area.
Meanwhile, Governor Aiyedatiwa has charged security operatives to enforce the curfew and to arrest perpetrators of the violence in the affected area.
Aiyedatiwa further charged security operatives to ensure safety of lives and properties, and also restore peace to the community.
