International Widows’ Day : Coordinator Office of the First Lady Champions Uplifting of Widow’s Voices

The Coordinator Office of the First Lady, Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, today joins widows, their families, and advocates across Nigeria in commemorating International Widows Day 2025 with the theme “Uplifting Widows’ Voices.”
This theme reminds us of the importance of ensuring that widows are heard and their needs are placed at the forefront of policy and community action.
Widows often carry the weight of profound loss and societal stigma, yet they demonstrate remarkable resilience and strength. On this International Widows Day, the Coordinator honors their unbreakable spirit, acknowledging the vital roles they play in their families and communities.
Mrs Anani said, “by amplifying widows’ stories and experiences, we challenge long-standing stereotypes and break the silence that too often surrounds widowhood.
Let’s say no to Harmful Widowhood Practices (HWP) in our community. Harmful Widowhood Practices are obnoxious inhuman treatment following the death of their husband. These practices involve dehumanizing rites and rituals that women are mandated to follow. Widowhood is often the beginning of life-long oppression and misery for women”.
Mrs. Anani called on all Edo State residents, Government Agency, Civil Society Organization (CSOs), Non Governmental Organisation (NGOs) to stand in solidarity with widows today and every day.
The International Widows Day, observed annually on June 23, was established by the United Nations to highlight the unique challenges widows face worldwide and to mobilize action toward securing their economic, social, and legal rights.
Let’s recommit ourselves to listening to widows’ voices and ensuring their inclusion in all areas of decision-making.
