In a bid to enhance care and inclusion for individuals with autism, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, Coordinator, Office of the First Lady of Edo State, convened a strategic stakeholder meeting at Government House.

The gathering brought together government officials, health professionals, educators and non‑governmental organizations to chart a course for better management, prevention and public awareness of autism spectrum disorder.

During her opening remarks, Mrs. Anani emphasized the critical need for community education. She noted that “autism awareness is essential. We must create a more inclusive environment for individuals with special needs by informing parents and the public, dispelling myths, and offering strong support systems for families and caregivers.” By raising awareness and breaking down stigma, she urged all participants to work collaboratively to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals living with autism and their families.

Senator Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, affirmed his administration’s dedication to expanding resources within this sector. He pledged increased funding and policy support to strengthen diagnostic, therapeutic and educational services for children and adults on the spectrum, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving health outcomes and social inclusion.

Dr. Cyril Oshiomole, Commissioner for Health, stressed the importance of reframing the narrative around autism. He called for a shift in focus toward acceptance, understanding and empowerment celebrating the unique strengths of people with autism rather than perpetuating stereotypes. Dr. Oshiomole outlined plans to integrate mental‑health resources, speech and occupational therapy, and specialized nutritional guidance into existing health facilities, and he urged closer partnerships with schools to foster inclusive classrooms and individualized learning plans.

Hon. Sandra Igene, Coordinator of the Edo State Autism Awareness Program, announced that the inaugural edition will take place on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the New Festival Hall, Government House. The event will feature therapy workshops with speech therapists, physiotherapists, mental‑health professionals and dietitians; educational seminars offering practical guidance for parents, guardians and caregivers; and interactive stations where children can demonstrate their talents in a supportive environment.

The Executive Director, Osno Foundation, Sabina Idowu, highlighted the value of real‑world experiences for autistic children. She explained that taking children to the supermarket and letting them handle purchases teaches them money management and builds confidence, noting that these practical life skills are essential for independent living.

The meeting concluded with a renewed call for a multicultural, multisectoral approach. Stakeholders affirmed Edo State’s unwavering commitment to advancing the health and well‑being of persons living with autism, strengthening support networks and promoting full inclusion in every facet of community life.
