Nigeria’s Super Eagles are gearing up for a do-or-die showdown against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the final of Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers playoff on Sunday, November 16. The winner will secure Africa’s lone spot in the inter-confederation playoffs in March 2026, vying for one of two additional berths to the expanded 48-team tournament hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The match, a neutral-site single-elimination bout at the state-of-the-art Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, pits two resilient sides against each other after dramatic semifinal triumphs on Thursday.
Nigeria’s Extra-Time Thriller Over Gabon
The Super Eagles advanced with a commanding 4-1 victory over Gabon after extra time at Moulay El Hassan Stadium. Trailing 1-1 deep into normal time, Nigeria erupted in the additional period:
- Akor Adams (78′) capitalized on a defensive lapse to open the scoring.
- Gabon equalized via Mario Lemina’s deflected shot in the 89th minute.
- Chidera Ejuke (91′) restored the lead with a clinical finish from Wilfred Ndidi’s assist.
- Victor Osimhen sealed it with a ruthless brace (105′, 110′), his eighth goal in six qualifiers.
Under coach Eric Chelle, Nigeria’s turnaround—marked by four wins in their last six qualifiers—has reignited hopes of a seventh World Cup appearance, absent since 2018.
DR Congo’s Stunning Upset Against Cameroon
The Leopards pulled off a seismic shock, edging five-time African champions Cameroon 1-0 in stoppage time at Al Barid Stadium. Captain Chancel Mbemba rose highest to head home a corner from Meschack Elia, capping a gritty defensive masterclass led by Cedric Bakambu and Fiston Mayele’s counter-threats.
DRC, who topped Group B with seven wins, denied Cameroon a record ninth World Cup outing. Coach Issama Mpeko’s side now eyes their first global finals since 1974.
Head-to-Head: A Battle of Styles
Historically, Nigeria holds the edge with three wins in five meetings, but DRC’s recent form (unbeaten in six) suggests a tense affair. Kickoff is at 8pm local time (7pm GMT), with Osimhen’s firepower clashing against Mbemba’s steel.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe hailed the playoffs: “Africa’s passion shines through—these matches embody our continent’s spirit.”
