Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has stated that the proposed Ondo Deep Sea Port will serve as a major hub for international trade, benefiting not only Ondo State but also Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.
The governor made the remarks after receiving the revalidated licence for the project from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola.
Describing the port as critical infrastructure, Aiyedatiwa emphasized that it goes beyond state-level utility, positioning Ondo as a gateway for international business and maritime operations. He noted that the port is designed to support industries, commerce, and the broader economy, offering facilities capable of accommodating businesses across Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
The governor highlighted that the port has a natural draught of approximately 18 metres, allowing very large vessels—larger than those currently handled at Lagos ports—to berth directly. This depth and size would eliminate the need for trans-shipment, enabling vessels to sail straight into Ondo State waters.
Aiyedatiwa also outlined the wider economic benefits of the project, stressing that once construction begins, Ondo State would experience increased human and commercial activities. The governor added that the port would attract investors, financial institutions, and service providers, providing a boost to the hospitality sector and related industries.
