The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a resolution directing security and regulatory agencies to crack down on vehicles using covered number plates and those operating without registration in the state.
The move followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Uwem Imoh-Ita, representing Mkpat Enin Constituency.
The House specifically mandated the Akwa Ibom Police Command to enforce a strict ban on covered plates and unregistered vehicles. It also tasked the state Ministry of Works and Fire Service with engaging construction companies to ensure full compliance.
Additionally, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) was urged to step up surveillance to safeguard public safety.
Presenting the motion, Imoh-Ita highlighted that many residents, particularly construction firms, routinely use vehicles—especially heavy-duty trucks—without proper registration or visible identification.
“This practice is illegal and poses a serious danger,” he said. “In case of accidents, such vehicles cannot be traced, endangering lives and undermining security.”
The resolution aims to curb road safety risks and enhance accountability on state roads.
