Anambra to Reclaim Illegal Land, Greenlights N530.3m for Infrastructure

By Peter.

The Anambra State Government has pledged to recover public lands illegally occupied across the state and is moving forward with establishing a dedicated committee for this purpose.

This resolution emerged from the 25th Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) meeting held on Monday, December 15, 2025, at the Government House in Awka. State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, announced the decisions in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Highlighting rampant unauthorized construction on government properties, Mefor explained that the council approved forming a task force to identify and reclaim encroached lands throughout Anambra.

The meeting also addressed the severe erosion crisis, described as an “existential threat.” Officials blamed unchecked resident practices—such as channeling stormwater onto public roads—and lax enforcement of environmental rules for aggravating gullies and degradation.

To tackle this, ANSEC directed stricter compliance: residents must manage rainwater on their properties, communities are required to build erosion barriers, and sand mining is restricted to designated sites.

In other approvals, the council released ₦530.3 million for various infrastructure projects:

  • ₦95.3 million for water supply to the Ekwulobia Flyover Bridge fountain and garden (Double NC Construction & Logistics Ltd).
  • ₦172.2 million for landscaping the Trauma Centre car park at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka (Triseconds Resources Ltd).
  • ₦93.4 million for three-way traffic lights with pedestrian signals at Ifite-Amenyi junction, Awka (S.N.U. Ventures).
  • ₦50.4 million for 10kVA inverters and lithium batteries at the State Civil Service Commission building (Kennolly Enterprises).
  • ₦1.19 million total for transformer substations in Nnewi and Umueze-Anam (Aries and Gold Ventures Ltd; Aljovic Construction Ltd).

These initiatives align with ongoing efforts to curb illegal land grabs, combat environmental damage, and enhance urban infrastructure amid rapid development pressures in key areas like Awka, Onitsha, and Nnewi.
