Atiku Rejects Allegations of Giving SUV to Naval Officer in Wike Dispute

By Peter.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has swiftly dismissed circulating social media rumors that he donated a brand-new Toyota SUV to Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima, the naval officer at the center of a heated confrontation with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over a disputed Abuja land plot.

In a statement posted on Thursday via Atiku’s X account, his Media Adviser Paul Ibe labeled the allegation “entirely fabricated” and urged the public to ignore it.

“His Excellency Atiku Abubakar… did not gift Lt. Ahmed Yerima — or any other individual — a brand new Toyota SUV, contrary to the false reports currently circulating on social media. The story is entirely fabricated and should be completely disregarded by the public.”

The hoax originated on Facebook on Wednesday, falsely portraying the supposed gift as a reward for Yerima’s defiance against Wike.

The Backstory: Wike vs. Yerima Standoff

The incident unfolded in Abuja’s Gaduwa District, where Wike—accompanied by security—challenged Yerima and armed naval personnel guarding a property allegedly tied to retired Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo.

A viral video captured Wike’s fiery accusations, claiming Gambo had illegally seized the land. The exchange ignited online debates about power dynamics, protocol breaches, and respect among officials.

Atiku’s denial comes amid ongoing political tensions, underscoring the rapid spread of misinformation in Nigeria’s digital space.
