American rapper Azealia Banks is trending after making a series of controversial statements about Afrobeats, Nigerian culture, and singer Rema during a recent podcast interview.
During the discussion, Banks said:
“I don’t want to listen to someone singing in pidgin; I’d rather listen to someone sing in patois. I don’t like Afrobeats. Nigerians have no culture, they’re eating salty rice, and who even cooks with palm oil? I don’t like Rema; he’s a skinny little boy.”
Her comments have sparked widespread backlash on social media, with fans and music enthusiasts defending Rema and celebrating the global influence of Afrobeats. Many criticized Banks for her remarks about Nigerian culture, calling them disrespectful and dismissive of the genre’s impact worldwide.
The rapper’s statements have reignited discussions about international perceptions of African music and culture, highlighting both the growing global presence of Afrobeats and the sensitivity surrounding cultural representation.
