Suspected armed bandits invaded the Aiyetoro Kiri community in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, but were swiftly repelled by local vigilantes, preventing any abductions despite gunfire exchanges that claimed two lives.
Attack Details
The hoodlums stormed the settlement, firing indiscriminately to terrorize residents and reportedly heading toward the local high school. However, the Kiri Vigilante Group mobilized quickly, blocking access and engaging the intruders in a shootout. No students or residents were kidnapped, but one vigilante and one resident (identified as a Hausa trader) were killed by stray bullets.
A local resident recounted:
“The gun-wielding hoodlums came into the town shooting sporadically… Initially, residents said they were moving towards the high school. I learnt the vigilantes blocked the route and prevented them from accessing the area. Two people were reported killed.”
Official Response
Kabba/Bunu LGA Chairman Hon. Zacchaeus Dare Michael confirmed the incident in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Omofa John:
“The bandits attacked, and they were resisted and repelled by our team of security men. Though there were casualties—one hunter and one Hausa man killed by stray bullets—the Joint Task Force has intensified operations to restore confidence in the area.”
Michael assured normalcy has returned, with joint security teams and vigilantes combing surrounding bushes. He warned against unverified social media reports, threatening legal action for misinformation.
Kogi State Security Adviser Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd) debunked viral claims of a school invasion and student kidnappings as “false,” urging the public to rely on official channels.
The attack highlights ongoing banditry threats in Kogi’s border areas, but community vigilance proved decisive this time.
