A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) identified as Abba has reportedly been killed by suspected bandits despite the payment of a ₦10 million ransom by his family.
Abba was abducted while travelling in northern Nigeria, and the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom for his release. The family and supporters managed to raise the full amount in a desperate bid to secure his freedom. However, after receiving the money, the bandits allegedly stopped all communication with the family, raising fears for his safety.
Further reports indicate that the abductors later made additional demands, including motorcycles and other items, before they would consider releasing the corps member. The family reportedly refused to comply, fearing further deception. With no contact from the kidnappers, the family has begun preparations for a Janaza (funeral prayer in absentia) in accordance with Islamic tradition.
The incident highlights the persistent threat of kidnapping and banditry in certain regions of Nigeria, where travelers and young corps members are increasingly vulnerable. Abba’s tragic death underscores the risks faced by individuals traveling through areas known for criminal activities.
Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, but investigations are reportedly ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide updates as the situation develops.
