Netflix’s charming crime-comedy A Man on the Inside, created by Mike Schur (Parks and Recreation, The Good Place), drops its second season today, November 22, 2025—all eight episodes streaming now. Inspired by the 2020 Oscar-nominated Chilean documentary The Mole Agent, the series follows widowed retiree Charles Nieuwendyk (Ted Danson), a former engineering professor turned amateur sleuth, as he infiltrates institutions to solve low-stakes capers with high emotional stakes.
Season 1 (premiered Nov. 21, 2024) was a love letter to San Francisco, with Charles posing as a resident at the Nob Hill-set Pacific View Retirement Community to uncover jewelry thefts. It featured iconic SF flair: cable car B-roll, a whirlwind Episode 7 tour from the Golden Gate Bridge to Oracle Park (SF Giants stadium) and a sea lion-packed Fisherman’s Wharf pier—complete with barking chaos that Schur called “almost comic” in a 2024 SFGATE interview. Exteriors lensed at spots like 1201 California St. (Grace Cathedral area) and Piazza Pellegrini restaurant, though interiors were LA soundstages.
Season 2: Undercover Professor at Fictional Wheeler College
This time, Charles swaps elder care for academia, going undercover at the made-up Wheeler College—a scandal-plagued Bay Area liberal arts school flooded with shady cash from a sleazy tech mogul. Filming shifted to Oakland’s Mills College (now a Northeastern University campus) for that leafy, optimistic vibe, capturing the region’s free-thinking ethos. Less SF-centric than S1 (principal photography May–June 2025, mostly LA), it nods to the city with a cozy Irish coffee scene at a Buena Vista Cafe stand-in, where Charles bonds with love interest Mona (Mary Steenburgen, Danson’s real-life wife).
The plot pivots from blackmail intrigue to heartfelt romance: Charles, still grieving his wife, navigates sparks with music prof Mona amid the probe. Returning: Lilah Richcreek Estrada as PI Julie, Stephanie Beatriz as Didi (recurring). New faces: Gary Cole, Jill Talley, Michaela Conlin, Max Greenfield, Sam Huntington, Jason Mantzoukas, Constance Marie, David Strathairn.
Schur’s signature blend—witty ensemble comedy, unlikely families, and gentle growth—shines, earning S1 AFI Top 10 honors and Danson Golden Globe/SAG noms. Early buzz praises S2’s “heartwarming” pivot, with Danson’s “irresistible charm” carrying the load. Mystery: Will Charles return to SF for S3? (Renewal TBD.)
Stream now on Netflix—perfect for cozy binges. Danson’s sleuthing proves age is just a number… or a clever disguise.
