The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yielded to stakeholders’ appeals, extending the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Edo and Ondo states by four days. Initially set to conclude on Wednesday 5 June 2024 the exercise will now run from Thursday, June 6, to Sunday, June 9, 2024.
This move aims to accommodate more eligible individuals seeking to register.
According to Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the decision was made during a Tuesday meeting in Abuja. To enhance accessibility, registration hours have been extended from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily and additional centers have been established in all 36 Local Government offices across the two states.
As at June 3, 2024, the registration exercise has seen significant progress, with 120,458 new voters registered. The breakdown shows 55,861 males (46.4%) and 64,597 females (53.6%) with the majority being youths (82,003 or 68.8%) between 18 and 34 years old. Students make up 36.8% of registered voters, while 812 (0.67%) are Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
The Commission emphasizes that these figures are preliminary and will be refined through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) before the final state-by-state and category-specific results are released.
INEC urges eligible voters to take advantage of this extension to register, transfer or correct their PVC information, as no further extensions will be granted.
