Chinese authorities have mandated the delisting of two leading gay dating platforms—Blued and Finka—from mobile app marketplaces within the country, a move confirmed by Apple on Tuesday amid escalating scrutiny of queer visibility.
The apps, both under the umbrella of Hong Kong-headquartered BlueCity Holdings, vanished from iOS and select Android stores over the weekend, sparking buzz on domestic social feeds. “We comply with regulations in our operational regions,” an Apple representative stated, pinpointing the directive to the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC)—Beijing’s premier digital overseer and content gatekeeper. The purge targets only the mainland storefronts; existing installs remain operational for current users, barring new downloads.
Same-sex unions hold no legal ground in China, where bias against LGBTQ+ individuals lingers deeply, and rights advocates decry a surge in suppression tactics—intensified during Xi Jinping’s tenure. This includes shuttering advocacy hubs, scrubbing queer narratives from screens, and ramping up surveillance. Blued, a global heavyweight with 49 million sign-ups and 6 million monthly actives as of 2020, alongside its rival Finka (acquired for $33 million that year), served as vital lifelines for millions in a landscape starved of open connections.
A stripped-down iteration of Blued lingers in Apple’s China catalog for now, while its rebranded global sibling, HeeSay, touts a 54-million-strong international network and stays downloadable abroad. Finka, meanwhile, proactively pulled from non-Chinese markets earlier in 2025, and Blued had been China-exclusive.
The CAC’s handiwork echoes a 2022 sweep that axed Grindr ahead of the Beijing Winter Games, part of a broader “cleanup” blitz. Recent months have seen the agency slap fines on platforms for lax moderation, from viral memes to unfiltered chats. No word yet from the CAC or BlueCity on permanence—past precedents show some apps claw back access post-tweaks, but timelines stay murky.

This episode spotlights the tightrope tech behemoths tread in the Middle Kingdom: market muscle versus moral minefields. As one analyst noted, “It’s not just apps—it’s erasing digital safe spaces in a nation where coming out can cost everything.”
