The Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations (CONGOS) held its 2024 Annual General Meeting in Benin City, with stakeholders emphasizing the critical role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in fostering accountability, transparency, and ethical practices.

Addressing the audience, the Chairperson, Mrs. Sabina Idowu Osaibo, highlighted the intermediary role of CONGOS between the government and the people. She stressed the importance of recognizing and strengthening CSOs, advocating for consistency, transparency, and ethical accountability. “We cannot afford to compromise and let our people suffer.

We must remain conscious, transparent, and accountable,” she urged, calling on CSOs to resist corruption, regardless of government involvement.

Dr. Bathlomew Okoudo, President of CONGOS, praised the organization’s executive team and members for their dedication. He highlighted the significance of the award ceremony, stating, “I owe everything to the members who have supported this organization from the beginning by paying their dues, attending conferences, and participating in events.”

He also addressed issues related to the rule of law, physical challenges, and societal vices such as cultism and ritualism, urging the need for enlightenment programs and collective efforts against these challenges.

Professor Eddie Eragbe, another keynote speaker, emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration between CSOs and the government to achieve sustainable development.

In discussions with executive members and attendees, the focus remained on ensuring continuity, sustainability, and collaboration with the government while holding authorities accountable.

The event concluded with a moment of silence in honor of deceased CSO members, followed by an award presentation to deserving individuals.

Dr. Bathlomew Okoudo gave a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and reiterating the importance of unity and collective action in driving societal progress.
