Washington state continues to grapple with severe flooding from relentless atmospheric river storms, resulting in levee failures, widespread highway closures, and one confirmed fatality.
Governor Bob Ferguson reported at a Tuesday news conference that over 1,200 rescues have been conducted across 10 counties since December 8. Several levees have now failed after holding during initial storms, while low-lying areas in western Washington remain inundated with slowly draining floodwaters.
Thirteen state highways are closed, including major routes like Highway 2 across the Cascades—which could stay shut for months—and Interstate 90, impacted by significant mudslides.
“Our infrastructure has been compromised,” Ferguson stated. “There’s tremendous stress on that infrastructure.”
A 33-year-old man died early Tuesday in Snohomish County, north of Seattle, after his vehicle entered a ditch along a flooded rural farm road—the state’s first storm-related death. Ferguson called the limited fatalities a “minor miracle” given the scale.
The ongoing rains are testing dams, levees, and transportation networks, with recovery efforts expected to be prolonged.
