The Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has paid her final tribute to the late Major General Godwin Abbe, describing him as a man whose legacy will endure for generations.

Mrs. Anani made this statement during the commendation and funeral service held in honor of the late elder statesman at the United Baptist Church in Benin City, Edo State.

Speaking at the event, she described the late General as a distinguished son of Edo State whose influence and impact were widely felt. She emphasized that his legacy would continue to live on through the countless lives he touched and inspired during his lifetime.

Addressing the bereaved family, Mrs. Anani urged them to find solace in the exemplary life their patriarch led. She encouraged them to uphold the standards he set and to live up to the reputation he built over the years, noting that the public expects them to carry on his legacy.

“Today, we gather to bid farewell to a great man, a true son of the soil, who dedicated his life to the service of Edo State and the nation at large. The testimonies we have heard today confirm that he left an enduring legacy. His footprints remain in the sands of time, and as a state, we are honored to lay him to rest,” Mrs. Anani stated.

“It is our prayer that children bury their fathers, not the other way around. Though his passing is painful, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on, and his influence will continue to inspire,” she concluded.

In his sermon, the Archbishop of the United Baptist Church Mission of Nigeria, Most Revd. Dr. Osama Usunalele (JP), extolled the late General’s virtues, describing him as a selfless and genuine Christian whose impact resonated throughout the Christian community. He urged those present to emulate his exemplary lifestyle and contribute positively to society while they still have the opportunity.

The Archbishop also prayed for the family and encouraged them to remain steadfast in preserving his legacy, stating, “Our general is not dead; he has merely transitioned to a better place.”

Major General Godwin Osagie Abbe, a former Minister of Defence and Interior, passed away at the age of 75 on December 21, 2024.

Until his death, he was a dedicated leader and elder statesman whose contributions left an indelible mark on society.
