Barrister Olumide Akpata, the Edo Labour Party Gubernatorial Candidate, has voiced serious concerns over the repeated destruction of his campaign billboards in Benin, the Edo State capital. At a press briefing attended by prominent Labour Party leaders, including Rev. Sam Akpata, Director General of the Olumide Akpata Campaign Organization, Akpata pointed to a coordinated and deliberate effort behind these attacks.
Akpata emphasized the necessity of maintaining democratic integrity and ensuring a fair electoral process. He noted that the billboards were legally installed, calling for an end to the destructive actions.
He recounted specific incidents: two billboards in the Oredo local government area were defaced and torn down, with threats of more such actions. Similarly, in Ovia North East, other billboards were destroyed by what he described as anti-democratic forces tied to the state government.
Additionally, in Ikpoba Okha, the LP campaign received direct threats targeting their promotional materials.
Akpata criticized these acts as undemocratic, suggesting they reveal a regime troubled by the electorate’s push for change.
Responding to these allegations, State Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Hon. Chris Nehikhare, acknowledged the Labour Party candidate’s concerns and denounced the vandalism. He urged all parties to address grievances through appropriate channels, emphasizing the importance of civility and adherence to the law in political conduct.
Nehikhare called for political leaders to foster constructive dialogue and peaceful interactions, reiterating the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.
He also encouraged Akpata to resolve internal conflicts within his party and work towards unity, striving for a peaceful and inclusive election process to benefit all citizens of Edo State.
