A 37-year-old man from Mhondoro, Zimbabwe, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for breaking into his mother-in-law’s bedroom and brutally r@ping her while her 94-year-old mother watched in horror.
Walter Maponga of Mandaza Village was convicted of r@pe and assault by Harare regional magistrate Jessie Kufa on December 2, 2025, after the State proved beyond doubt that he carried out the horrific attack on September 17, 2025, in Makoni Village.
Court records show that Maponga stormed into the 56-year-old victim’s bedroom at night, accused her of “taking his wife away,” and began beating her while demanding s3x. He then forced her to the ground and r@ped her in front of her elderly, helpless mother.
The assault only ended when two neighbours — Godfrey Makoni and Cleopas Nziramasanga — heard the screams, rushed in, overpowered Maponga, and rescued the victim. The brave duo held him until police arrived.
Delivering sentence, Magistrate Kufa said the State had established an “overwhelming prima facie case,” describing the crime as particularly aggravated because it:
- Violated sacred family bonds
- Was committed in the presence of a 94-year-old woman
- Involved extreme violence and humiliation
The conviction has brought a measure of justice to the traumatised rural community, where residents remain shaken by the betrayal of trust within a family.
Maponga will serve 15 years behind bars.
