Former lawmaker representing Jos South/East Federal Constituency, Dachung Bagos, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is showing no signs of recovery as the country heads toward the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast programme on Monday, Bagos argued that the PDP’s prolonged internal crises and repeated breaches of due process have created deep uncertainty among aspirants hoping to contest under the party.
He criticised the PDP for releasing only one nomination form for the national chairmanship contest—an action later nullified by the court for failing to comply with due process.
According to Bagos, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang remains the political leader of the state, and his guidance will be crucial for PDP members if the party fails to resolve its leadership and structural challenges before the next election cycle.
He urged aspirants to carefully assess the ongoing turmoil, warning that the party’s direction “does little to inspire confidence.”
Bagos said:
“But I can tell you for now, the leader of the ‘Plateau Peoples Party’ is His Excellency Barr. Caleb Mutfwang. We are waiting for his direction to see which of the registered parties to move to, if the PDP fails to fix itself before the election… we must tell ourselves the truth.”
Bagos also faulted the expulsion of high-profile members during the recent PDP national convention, noting that the leadership failed to establish a disciplinary committee before suspending or expelling anyone.
He described the party as drifting further into crisis:
“For now, I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel for the PDP going into the general election… you sold only one form for the chairmanship election, and the court ruled there was no due process. Then you expelled members through a voice vote without a disciplinary committee.”
He advised PDP aspirants to “think very well, analyse issues, consult widely, and look for a way forward,” warning that the party’s internal disarray could jeopardise their political ambitions.
At the 2025 PDP National Convention in Ibadan on Saturday, the party elected Kabiru Turaki as National Chairman and former Oyo State Deputy Governor Taofeek Arapaja as National Secretary.
The convention also produced a wave of expulsions, targeting several prominent figures including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, former National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, ex-Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose, and Imo PDP Chairman Austin Nwachukwu, among others, over alleged anti-party activities.
The motion for their expulsion was moved by former Deputy National Chairman (South) Bode George and seconded by Bauchi State PDP Chairman Samaila Buga.
It was subsequently put to a voice vote by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, earning overwhelming support from delegates.
The sweeping expulsions, party leaders say, signal a renewed effort to address internal dissent—but critics like Bagos argue they only highlight the PDP’s deepening divisions ahead of the 2027 elections.
