Edo at 33: Obaseki Reaffirms Master Plan as Strategic Guide for State’s Future, Not a Political Tool

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has emphasized that the Benin City and Edo State Regional Development Plan is a long-term strategic guide, not a political document. Speaking at the state’s 33rd anniversary, he highlighted the importance of the master plan, which will be reviewed every five years, as a “living document” that will guide future administrations in sustaining the state’s development. Obaseki remarked, “This document is not for today but for the future,” and assured that it would be continually improved upon to reflect the needs of the people.
The governor also pointed out the necessity of having a “compass” to direct future governments, stating, “What we started 8 years ago is still a work in progress. It hasn’t finished because one government alone cannot do all that is required to develop a society or a country.” He further noted the critical role Edo plays in Nigeria’s future, saying, “Edo existed before Nigeria and will continue to exist with Nigeria as we are a very critical part of the country.”
In her remarks, the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, expressed pride in integrating the education sector into the state’s master plan, ensuring it is embedded within the school curriculum.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Physical Planning, Housing, Urban, and Regional Development, Isoken Omo, acknowledged that the state had been without a master plan since 2012 until Obaseki’s administration intervened.
