The Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has pledged unwavering support to the Women’s Committee of the Edo State Council of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to enhance their capacity in advocating for workers’ rights and gender equity. She made this commitment during a courtesy visit by the committee at the Office of the First Lady, Government House, Benin City.

In her address, Mrs. Anani acknowledged the critical role of organized labor in fostering effective governance and ensuring a balanced relationship between management and the workforce.

“It is a pleasure to host the leadership of the women of the Nigerian Labour Congress. Globally, the NLC plays a defining role in shaping governance and labor policies, ensuring that workers’ interests are well represented. Your commitment to championing women’s rights in the workplace is commendable, as these rights must be amplified to foster inclusivity and equity,” she stated.

Speaking on behalf of the committee, Mrs. Osabuohien Itohan Philomena, Chairperson of the NLC Women’s Committee, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and extended an invitation to an upcoming program. She underscored the importance of the First Lady’s involvement in initiatives aimed at empowering women in the labor sector.

“We are here to formally inform you about our forthcoming event and to invite you as our Special Guest of Honor. Your presence will be invaluable in strengthening our advocacy for women in the workforce. Additionally, we seek financial assistance to support our initiatives and ensure their success,” Mrs. Osabuohien noted.

In response, Mrs. Anani reiterated her support for the committee and encouraged labor unions to prioritize dialogue as a means of conflict resolution.

“The administration of His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, remains committed to providing an enabling environment for productive engagement. In labor relations, dialogue remains the most effective tool for achieving sustainable solutions. I appeal to your leadership to always explore dialogue before considering industrial action. Let us come to the table, deliberate, and work together to find lasting resolutions,” she emphasized.

The meeting concluded on a note of solidarity, with members of the Women’s Committee reaffirming their dedication to advocating for workers’ rights and gender equity within the labor movement.
