Embracing Neurodiversity: Edo Ministry of Health, Office of the First Lady Launch Autism Awareness Initiative

The Edo State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady, has organized an Autism Awareness Day aimed at promoting awareness, inclusion, and support for individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The event which was held at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, Edo State, had dignitaries from all walks of life in attendance gracing the first edition.

Welcoming delegates to the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomole, emphasized the importance of embracing neurodiversity and promoting inclusion, stressing that the campaign is not just about raising awareness but about changing attitudes and building support systems that allow every child to thrive.

The Commissioner highlighted the need for early detection and intervention,
special education training and inclusive education policies, community education and awareness, establishing autism-friendly diagnostic centers and therapy hubs for persons living with autism, and providing mental health support to parents and caregivers

The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs Edesili Okpebholo Anani. emphasized the importance of prioritizing inclusivity and support for individuals with autism, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

According to her, “His Excellency,
Senator Monday Okpebholo, has pledged to increase funding and policy support to strengthen diagnostic, therapeutic, and educational services for children and adults on the spectrum”.

Mrs Anani further explained that individuals with autism face discrimination in accessing quality education, healthcare, employment, and social acceptance.

According to her: “It’s essential that we work together to create a society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive”.

The First Lady designate said, “we must create a more inclusive society, it’s essential that we prioritize the needs of children with autism”. “By doing so, we can help them develop the skills they need to succeed and make meaningful contributions to our communities”.

A speech therapist, Attamah Collins Chime said communication is a significant challenge for children with autism, noting t hat they often struggle to express themselves and understand others, which can lead to frustration and isolation.

He said: “That’s why early intervention is vital. If we can help these children improve their communication skills, we can build their confidence and empower them to live fulfilling lives”.

An Occupational Therapist, Mr Azena Salami stated that, “parents, caregivers and stakeholders should give persons living with autism an enabling environment to thrive despite their inability to communicate effectively. Autism is not a disability it’s a unique ability”, he added

The programme coordinator, Sandra Igene, appreciated Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, First Lady designate, Mrs Edesili Okpebholo Anani and Commissioner for health, Dr Cyril Oshiomole for their unwavering commitment and support to the wellbeing of persons with autism in Edo State.

  • The Ministry of Health and Office of the First Lady, Edo State is committed to expanding early screening programs, supporting inclusive education policies, and partnering with NGOs and specialists to promote awareness and support.

The event called on stakeholders to work together to create a society that values diversity and inclusivity, providing individuals suffering from autism with the necessary resources and care to reach their full potential.
