The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), has officially launched the “10,000 Women in Mobility” programme, aimed at economically empowering women across Nigeria.
The initiative provides women in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory with access to vehicles, tricycles (commonly called Keke), and motorcycles. By doing so, it enables them to participate in transportation, logistics, delivery services, and other mobility-related ventures, boosting both financial independence and economic participation.
Speaking during the launch and handover of mobility assets, the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, highlighted the importance of creating economic opportunities for women. She noted that the Abuja pilot phase had already provided vehicles to 1,000 women, with the programme set to expand nationwide to reach 10,000 beneficiaries.
“This is an economic empowerment initiative. It’s about how much effort they put in and how effectively they use the vehicles,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim said. “President Tinubu’s goal is a $1 trillion economy, and we are working across sectors to ensure women are fully integrated. Women make up over 50 percent of Nigeria’s population, and their economic participation benefits not only themselves and their families but the country as a whole.”
The programme also helps women build credible financial histories, unlocking future access to credit.
Several stakeholders have praised the initiative. Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; Director General, National Automotive Design and Development Council, Oluwemimo Osanipin; and National President, National Council for Women Society, Princess Edna Azura described it as a timely intervention to expand women’s participation in the mobility and transport sector.
Onyejeocha highlighted its societal impact, stating, “Previously, it was unusual for women to operate commercial tricycles or vehicles. With the Renewed Hope Agenda, everyone—men, women, and youth—can participate in the transport sector, creating economic opportunities across the board.”
CREDICORP CEO Nwagba added that the programme is a practical step toward expanding financial inclusion and strengthening Nigeria’s consumer credit ecosystem. He explained that the agency is partnering with stakeholders to integrate financing, asset supply, training, and business support, ensuring beneficiaries can succeed in their mobility businesses.
The programme has already handed over the first 300 locally assembled tricycles and is expected to empower 10,000 women across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, it aims to increase incomes, deepen financial inclusion, and strengthen the country’s mobility sector.
