The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has ramped up its readiness mechanisms across Nigeria to ensure swift responses to potential emergencies during the festive period and beyond, Director-General Mrs. Zubaida Umar announced on Saturday, December 13, 2025.
Speaking in Abuja during a staff fitness walk—a 5km route exercise aimed at boosting physical preparedness, teamwork, and operational discipline—Umar emphasized NEMA’s role as the frontline coordinator for disaster mitigation, partnering with federal, state, local agencies, security forces, and responders.
Key Highlights from NEMA’s Festive Alert
- Activated Mechanisms: Full standby across zonal, territorial, and state offices for rapid intervention.
- Inter-Agency Collaboration: Exercise included stakeholders from the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, and FRSC—reinforcing joint response capabilities.
- Public Safety Appeal: Nigerians urged to prioritize caution:
- Avoid speeding and obey traffic rules on roads.
- Exercise vigilance on waterways, public gatherings, and residential areas.
Mrs. Umar praised staff fitness and discipline: “Physical preparedness is critical to effective emergency response, especially during heightened activity periods.”
Air Commodore Bature Usman, Director of Search and Rescue, described the walk as a routine drill to keep personnel “physically and mentally prepared” year-round.
NEMA’s proactive stance comes amid Nigeria’s busy Yuletide travel season, historically marked by road accidents, fires, and crowd incidents. The agency reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding lives and property—stay safe, Nigeria!
