Federal Government Suspends Enforcement of NAFDAC’s Sachet Alcohol Ban
The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has ordered an immediate halt to all enforcement actions on the proposed ban of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small bottles (<200ml), pending comprehensive review and a final directive.
In a statement dated December 15, 2025, by Special Adviser on Public Affairs Terrence Kuanum, the suspension follows a November 13 letter from the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control (signed by Deputy Chairman Uchenna Okonkwo), raising concerns over NAFDAC’s planned December 2025 enforcement.
The OSGF emphasized its coordinating role, declaring any unauthorized enforcement by NAFDAC or others “of no effect” until cleared. It assured balanced consideration of legislative, health, economic, and national interest factors, with public updates forthcoming.
Background on the Ban: Originating from a 2018 MoU with industry stakeholders, the phase-out (initially 2024, extended to December 2025) targets misuse among youths and drivers. NAFDAC DG Mojisola Adeyeye reaffirmed commitment in November, backed by Senate resolution for no further delays. However, National Assembly pressure—citing economic impacts and consultations—prompted this pause.
This intervention highlights inter-agency coordination challenges in Nigeria’s public health and regulatory landscape.
