Flour Price Drop Claim Refuted by Bakers

By Peter.

The Premium Breadmakers Association of Nigeria (PBAN) has strongly refuted viral social media claims suggesting a significant drop in flour prices, labeling them as “malicious and highly deceptive.”

In a statement issued by General Secretary Emmanuel Onyoh, PBAN clarified that a 50kg bag of flour currently averages ₦59,000 (varying by brand and location), far from the rumored ₦35,000–₦40,000 range. The association accused the posts of falsely portraying bakers as unwilling to lower bread prices despite alleged flour reductions.

“We categorically state that these claims are false, baseless, and a calculated attempt to incite the public against hardworking bakers struggling to remain operational,” Onyoh emphasized.

While acknowledging a minor recent reduction of about ₦2,000 per bag, PBAN described it as insignificant—a “drop in the ocean”—amid soaring costs in other areas, including:

  • Energy (electricity and diesel for ovens/generators at record highs)
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Logistics and distribution
  • Minimum wage increases
  • Multiple taxation
  • Other essential ingredients beyond flour

These factors, the association said, create a “perfect storm” preventing any bread price cuts at present.

PBAN reassured consumers that members would promptly reduce bread prices once sustained economic improvements and cost declines materialize. The group remains committed to delivering quality, safe, and affordable bread meeting regulatory standards.

It urged the public to ignore misinformation from critics unfamiliar with Nigeria’s manufacturing challenges.
