Fourth Palestinian Baby Freezes to Death in Gaza Since November Amid Power Cuts and Flooded Tents

At least four Palestinian babies have died from cold-related causes in Gaza since November, as widespread power outages cripple hospital incubators and displaced families struggle to survive harsh winter conditions in flooded tents.

The latest victim, two-month-old Mohammed Abu Harbid, died of severe hypothermia at al-Rantisi Children’s Hospital, according to health officials. Zaher al-Wahidi, director of health information at Gaza’s Ministry of Health, confirmed the death.

This brings the number of infants who have frozen to death in the enclave since November to four, and at least 12 since the war began in October 2023.

Heavy rain, strong winds, and falling temperatures have intensified the humanitarian emergency, with infants, children, and the elderly among the most vulnerable, according to reports from Al Jazeera.

At al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat refugee camp, a newly opened neonatal ward is struggling to keep premature babies alive amid severe shortages of equipment, medication, and baby formula. Incubators reportedly lack internal batteries, rendering them useless during frequent power cuts—electricity reportedly failed multiple times within an hour during visits.

Medical staff warn that premature babies are especially susceptible to hypothermia, which can quickly become fatal without continuous heat and monitoring.

Outside hospitals, displaced families in makeshift tents face dire conditions. In western Gaza City, parents described sleepless nights as wind and rain flood bedding and illness spreads rapidly among children. Thin fabric tents offer little protection from cold or storms, and many families lack medicine, lighting, or proper shelter.

Children in the camps expressed simple wishes for warmer, more durable tents, while families appealed for urgent humanitarian aid—including caravans, winterised shelters, and basic supplies.

The crisis highlights the devastating impact of prolonged conflict, displacement, and infrastructure collapse on Gaza’s most vulnerable populations.

Heartbreaking loss of innocent lives – the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Prayers for the children and families enduring this unimaginable suffering. 🕊️
