The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is set to honor 2,747 undergraduate students at its 36th Convocation Ceremony, with an impressive 240 earning First-Class Honours — a testament to academic excellence amid Nigeria’s challenging tertiary landscape.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adenike Oladiji announced the figures on Friday during a press briefing on campus, highlighting the institution’s sustained reputation as a leading research-intensive university in technology and innovation.

Prof. Oladiji attributed the outstanding results to student discipline, consistent effort, and a conducive learning environment.
“The results we are celebrating today show that FUTA continues to maintain its standard as one of Nigeria’s foremost universities of technology,” she declared.

NELFUND: Over 3,000 FUTA Students Benefiting — But Awareness Lags
Despite government support through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Prof. Oladiji noted low student uptake due to:
- Limited awareness
- Reluctance to “study on credit”
“Over 3,000 students are already benefiting. The portal is open again — we’re encouraging applications,” she said. “It’s not that the government isn’t committed. Many students simply aren’t applying.”
Federal Government Launches Staff Loan Scheme at FUTA
In a related development, the Federal Government officially launched the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund — an interest-free loan scheme for academic and non-academic staff — during a ceremony at FUTA.
- Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, presented symbolic cheques to beneficiaries.
- 30,000 staff applied nationwide; 9,000 approved so far.
- Accompanied by Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, Alausa described it as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
