Galaxy Z TriFold: Samsung Launches Its First Multi-Folding Smartphone

By Ireti Asemota.

Samsung Electronics has officially unveiled the Galaxy Z TriFold, its boldest foldable yet—a tri-fold smartphone that unfolds into a massive 10-inch display, challenging rivals like Huawei and positioning Samsung for explosive growth in the premium mobile segment. Launched on December 2, 2025, in Seoul, the device marks Samsung’s entry into multi-folding territory, blending innovation with practicality amid intensifying competition from Chinese brands and Apple’s anticipated foldable debut.

Priced at 3,594,000 South Korean won (~$2,449 USD) for the single configuration (16GB RAM, 512GB storage), the Z TriFold starts sales in South Korea on December 12, 2025, expanding to China, Taiwan, Singapore, the UAE, and other Asian markets by year-end. A U.S. launch is slated for Q1 2026, with exact dates pending.

Samsung EVP Alex Lim hailed it as a “catalyst for foldable growth,” targeting discerning users rather than mass-market volume. “The foldable market will continue to grow,” Lim said, noting the TriFold’s focus on those “who specifically want it.”

Key Specs and Standout Features

The TriFold’s engineering prowess shines in its ultra-thin design and expansive utility:

  • Display: 10-inch inner OLED (253.1mm diagonal) using three panels—25% larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s 7.6-inch. Outer cover screen for quick glances; supports three apps side-by-side, resizable multi-windows, full-screen media, and vertical reading mode.
  • Processor: Customized Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3nm) with dual-chip setup (AR1 for AR, BES2800 for audio) for seamless multitasking.
  • Battery: Samsung’s largest in a foldable—5,600mAh three-cell system with 50% charge in 30 minutes via 45W fast charging. Balanced across panels for all-day endurance.
  • Cameras: 200MP main + 12MP ultrawide + 10MP telephoto rear; dual 10MP selfies (inner/outer). No stylus support, unlike some Fold models.
  • Build: 3.9mm thin (unfolded), 309g weight, IP48 dust/water resistance, titanium frame in Crafted Black. Android 16 out-of-box.
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.4, Wi-Fi 6, side fingerprint sensor.

The inward-folding hinges protect the main display, while Samsung DeX enables up to four workspaces with five apps simultaneously—ideal for productivity pros.

Market Context: Niche but Growing

Foldables remain a premium niche (<2% of 2025 shipments, per Counterpoint), but Samsung’s Q3 share surged to 64% from 9%—a testament to timing and execution. Huawei’s Mate XTs (September 2025) beat Samsung to tri-fold commercialization, while Apple’s foldable (expected 2026) looms large.

Analyst Ryu Young-ho (NH Investment): “First-gen tri-folds face durability hurdles, but Samsung’s seven Fold generations give it an edge in cost and refinement.” Counterpoint forecasts 14% market growth in 2025, accelerating to 30% annually through 2027 as Apple enters.

Challenges persist: Rising component costs (memory chips up sharply) drove the “difficult” pricing, per Lim. Production limits may cap volumes initially.

Strategic Play: Samsung’s Foldable Dominance

This launch reinforces Samsung’s foldable leadership (Galaxy Z series since 2019), countering Huawei’s gains in China. Lim: “It’s for customers who want it—not volume.” U.S. rollout (Q1 2026) targets early adopters via select retailers.

Hands-on reports praise the seamless unfolding and battery life, though weight and bezels draw minor gripes. Pre-orders on Tmall/JD.com topped 50,000 units in hours.

Samsung’s tri-fold era begins—will it fold the competition? Early signs say yes.
