Governor Okpebholo Vows Legal Action Over MOWAA, Citing "Suspicious" Last-Minute Dealings

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has issued a firm commitment to pursue criminal prosecutions in the escalating controversy surrounding the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), declaring that his administration will not shield individuals involved in opaque dealings that compromise the state’s interests.

The Governor’s declaration came during a high-level meeting on Friday with the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, at the Government House in Benin City.

Governor Okpebholo detailed a pattern of exclusion and procedural irregularities, revealing that his administration was deliberately sidelined from critical developments, including the arrival of a foreign delegation for an unannounced ceremony.

“I didn’t want to speak publicly on this again, but the time has come to state the facts,” Governor Okpebholo stated. “At the end of the day, there will be criminal prosecution on this matter. Our duty is to protect Edo State and, by extension, Nigeria. There will be no hiding place for criminals in our land.”

He presented what he termed “deeply troubling” evidence, including documents showing significant alterations to MOWAA’s registration details made a mere six days before his inauguration—a move he described as highly suspicious.

In her response, Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa acknowledged the federal government’s awareness of the disputes and framed the situation as an “original sin” that must be rectified. She emphasized the need for a collaborative resolution to restore the dignity of traditional institutions and protect Nigeria’s international cultural standing.

“We want to find a balanced solution that respects history, protects traditional institutions, and strengthens Nigeria’s global credibility,” the Minister stated, pledging the federal government’s support for a transparent and just outcome.

The meeting, attended by senior Edo State officials including the Speaker of the House of Assembly and the Attorney General, concluded with a mutual commitment to work closely with all stakeholders. Governor Okpebholo assured that his administration remains dedicated to defending the state’s integrity and ensuring that all projects adhere to the highest standards of transparency and due process.
