Holiday Stress Relief: 12 Tips to Reduce Bloating, Tension, and Exhaustion

By Peter.

The holidays are basically an ultra-marathon disguised as family time. Here are 12 stupidly simple, equipment-free moves you can sneak in all day to keep your energy high, digestion happy, and nervous system from short-circuiting.

Do them and you’ll finish December feeling like a human being instead of roadkill.

Morning – Set the tone before chaos hits

  1. 4-8 breathing in bed → Inhale nose 4 counts, exhale mouth 8 counts. Do 10 rounds. Instant “rest-and-digest” mode activated.
  2. Drink 500 ml water BEFORE coffee → You’ve been fasting 7–9 hours. Rehydrate first, thank me later.
  3. 5-minute joint circles → Ankles, hips, wrists, neck, spine. Lubricates everything for the standing/lifting marathon ahead.

Kitchen Survival Kit 4. 30-second stretch every time something goes in the oven → Arms overhead side bends + chest opener. Saves your shoulders and sanity.

5. Lift like you actually have a spine → Turkey out of oven? Hinge at hips, brace core, keep it close. Zero back pain, guaranteed.

6. Timer = body scan alarm → Every ding → drop shoulders, unclench jaw, wiggle toes. Takes 5 seconds, prevents 5pm meltdown.

Mealtime – Don’t undo all the cooking

7. 5-7-3 breath before first bite → 5 in, 7 out, pause 3. Switches digestion ON. 8. Fork-down rule → Put it down between bites. You’ll taste the food you slaved over instead of inhaling it.

9. 10-minute post-meal walk → Even laps around the house. Blood sugar stays stable, no 3pm food coma.

Evening – Don’t crash, land softly

10. 1-hour screen dim + warm shower/bath → Tells your brain the day is actually over.

11. Bedtime twist → Hug knees, drop both to one side, 3 deep breaths each way. Releases the entire day from your low back. 12. Progressive muscle relaxation → Feet → calves → thighs → glutes → belly → chest → arms → face. Tense 5 sec, release on long exhale. You’ll be asleep before you reach your neck.

Pick even 4–5 of these and you’ll glide through the holidays instead of limping to January 1st.

Your body did all the heavy lifting this year. Give it a little love back.
