Hon. Bright Iyamu, the Member representing Orhionmwon South Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly and Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Agriculture and Food Security, has paid glowing tribute to His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, CFR, for his unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom.
Hon. Iyamu made this commendation during a visit by members of the Edo State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, to the palace of the Oba of Benin. The visit was part of the ongoing Isoton traditional rites marking the culmination of the funeral ceremonies for the late Queen Mother, Iyoba Omo N’Ikuoyemwen (Iyoba Ewuare II).
Speaking with journalists at the palace, Hon. Iyamu emphasized the significance of preserving Edo’s rich cultural traditions. He stated:
“Edo State is renowned as a land of culture – the ancient city of bronze, the cradle of Black civilization, and the heartbeat of the nation. We must uphold our traditions and heritage. I urge everyone to embrace unity as a pathway to a more harmonious and peaceful society.”
Reflecting on the legacy of the late Iyoba, Hon. Iyamu described her as a woman of great wisdom and compassion.
*”History will remember the late Iyoba for her heroic deeds and boundless kindness toward all who sought her counsel. I encourage mothers to emulate her virtues as a means of fostering a better society.”*
The traditional rites, which commenced at Eguae Iyoba N’Uselu, are scheduled to last for 14 days. This observance aligns with Benin customs, which stipulate that funeral rites for an Iyoba can only take place after the reigning Omo N’Oba—formerly the Edaiken N’Uselu (Crown Prince)—has ascended the throne.
The ceremonies will feature a series of traditional activities, reaffirming the Benin Kingdom’s commitment to its longstanding cultural practices.
