A grieving husband in Kano State, **Abubakar Muhammad**, has accused doctors at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Fagge LGA of gross negligence following the death of his wife, **Aishatu Umar**, which he claims resulted from a pair of surgical scissors left inside her abdomen during an operation in September 2025.
Muhammad told Daily Trust that his wife, a mother of five, underwent surgery at the state-owned facility in September but began experiencing severe and persistent abdominal pain shortly afterward.
He alleged that despite repeated visits to the hospital to complain, doctors only prescribed painkillers and repeatedly assured her the pain was normal post-surgery, without ordering any X-ray or scan.
“Each time she went back to complain, they only prescribed painkillers. They kept telling her the pain was normal for patients who had undergone surgery, but they never recommended an X-ray or any form of scan,” he said.
Her condition worsened over four months until scans at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital — days before her death — revealed the forgotten scissors.
Efforts to arrange corrective surgery failed as Aishatu Umar died before the procedure could be carried out.
Describing the incident as “gross negligence,” Muhammad said it has caused immense grief and eroded trust in the healthcare system.
“While we acknowledge that death is inevitable, we cannot understand how such an error could occur during a surgical procedure. Incidents like this undermine public confidence in medical professionals and health institutions,” he stated.
He called on the Kano State Government and relevant regulatory bodies to investigate thoroughly and ensure justice is served.
In response, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, through Executive Secretary **Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda**, has ordered an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the matter.
“We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. The investigation will be transparent, impartial, and professional, and appropriate actions will be taken in line with established regulations should any negligence be established,” the Board stated.
The Board reiterated that patient safety remains its top priority and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of healthcare delivery in Kano State.
