A senior Ukrainian military officer has issued a stark warning that Britain is dangerously unprepared for a major war with Russia, risking a “high price in blood” if President Vladimir Putin escalates the Ukraine conflict to Europe. Major Viktor Andrusiv, a former presidential adviser, urged the UK to urgently adopt lessons from Ukraine’s battlefield—particularly drones and civilian mobilisation—before it’s “too late.”
“The biggest problem is that people don’t believe this can happen,” Andrusiv said, drawing parallels to Ukraine’s pre-2022 complacency when “tank columns and missile strikes seemed unthinkable.” He slammed Western disbelief as the greatest risk, amid Putin’s recent threats of war if Ukraine peace talks collapse.
Key Points from Andrusiv’s Warning
- UK Military Gaps: Outdated structure/equipment; “hollowed out” forces post-Cold War cuts. “I am sure you are not prepared—that doesn’t mean you would lose for sure, but you will pay a higher price.”
- Modern Warfare Shift: Professional armies insufficient; war involves “millions of civilians.” Ukraine’s millions of drones vs. UK’s “few thousand” (lasting <1 day at Ukrainian rates).
- Societal Prep Needed: Train civilians, adapt command—ignore lessons, and “war/deaths are closer than we think.”
Andrusiv’s comments align with NATO chief Mark Rutte‘s December 11 call for Europe to prepare for “the scale of war our grandparents endured,” labeling Russia Europe’s “next target.” UK Armed Forces Minister Al Carns echoed: Britain is on a “war footing,” with a 50% surge in Russian threats/attacks last year.
Putin’s Escalation Threats
Putin stated December 2: Russia is “ready right now” for war if Europe initiates—accusing allies of sabotaging US-led Ukraine talks. This follows stalled diplomacy and Trump’s envoy meetings.
UK Response & Broader Concerns
- Defence chiefs admit forces “under-prepared”; plans for rapid rearmament, including drone surges (100K to Ukraine in 2025).
- Analysts: UK needs billions more in personnel/ships/aircraft; current stockpile vulnerabilities exposed by Ukraine’s drone dominance.
As NATO pushes 5% GDP defence spending by 2035, Andrusiv’s plea underscores urgency: Disbelief could prove costly if conflict spills beyond Ukraine.
