Impunity Of Commercial Bus Drivers’ Reckless Driving Plagues Benin Metropolis.

The major roads and streets in Benin metropolis especially the New Benin Total junction, Sapele road by Ikpokpan junction to Dumez / Itohan Girls Grammar School gate and Ring Road a.k.a. King Square and the likes, have become a battleground for commuters, pedestrians and other road users, as commercial bus drivers continue to engage in reckless driving with impunity, flouting traffic rules and regulations.

The indiscriminate ‘loading’ and abrupt ‘dropping’ of passengers, almost at the center of these major roads, driving of ‘one way’, beating of traffic lights and causing other motorists fall victims of traffic laws (when you drive behind them) seem to witness an unprecedented and alarming rate of constant occurrence, causing chaos, putting so many lives at risk.

Despite numerous complaints and pleas to the law enforcement agencies, nothing seems to be done.

Eyewitnesses describe the situation as pathetic, with buses speeding through major roads, weaving in and out of traffic and ignoring basic safety protocols.

“I was almost hit by a bus on Sapele road last week” said Mrs. Edith Obasuyi, a commuter. “The driver in question was on top speed and didn’t even bother to stop at the pedestrian crossing as if he is the owner of the road.”

“We have reported several incidents to the authorities, but nothing seems to change,” said Mr. Mathew Obe, a concerned citizen.
Meanwhile, the law enforcement agencies declined comments, in an effort to get a word from them. However, from the grapevine, an Officer of the Edo State Traffic Managing Agency (EDSTMA) who prefer being anonymous said a committee has been set up to handle all the “troubles” associated with commercial bus drivers.

As the situation continues to deteriorates, commuters, pedestrians and other road users are calling on the Edo State Government to take a decisive action and address the dilemma of reckless driving in Benin metropolis as some lives have been maimed while many have lost their lives unexpectedly.

A stich in time, they say saves lives.
