Insecurity in Orhionmwon: Hon. Bright Iyamu Assures Government’s Commitment to Lasting Solutions

In a concerted effort to address the persistent insecurity plaguing Orhionmwon Local Government Area and its environs in Edo State, the Honourable Member representing Orhionmwon South Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Bright Iyamu, visited Urhonigbe Community today. His visit was to reassure constituents of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of lives and property.
During his address, Hon. Iyamu stated that the administration of His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, has put in place a robust security architecture aimed at tackling the menace of kidnapping, banditry, and other security threats in the state.
He announced the successful completion of an intensive training programme for 1,472 operatives of the newly reorganized Edo State Security Corps, with over 100 personnel earmarked for deployment to Orhionmwon. This, he said, marks a decisive step in the state’s renewed fight against insecurity.
_“Insecurity and kidnapping will soon become a thing of the past,”_ the lawmaker affirmed. “The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a bill to strengthen the legal framework against kidnapping. The Edo State Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law 2013 clearly defines the offence of kidnapping and prescribes stiff penalties. Anyone found guilty will face the full weight of the law.”
The Senior Olotu of Urhonigbe, Chief Jackson Ogie, speaking at the gathering, lamented the growing insecurity in the area, largely attributed to the activities of herdsmen.
_“Our greatest challenge is from the herdsmen who have turned into kidnappers. Since the beginning of this year, many of our people have stopped going to the farms. Recently, some of our members were kidnapped and we paid a ransom of seven million naira, yet we have neither seen nor heard from them.”_
He added, _“We’re afraid. We can’t farm or work. That is why we reached out to Hon. Iyamu to intervene and take our plight to the state government and relevant authorities. We sincerely appreciate him for his unrelenting support. His assurance gives us hope.”_
Mr. Omoguie Enofe, the Public Relations Officer of Urhonigbe, also recounted harrowing incidents of violence in the community.
_“June 14, 2024, was a dark day as several residents were killed by suspected herdsmen. Again, on May 24, 2025, eight persons were kidnapped. Despite paying a ransom of seven million naira, they have not been released,”_ he said.
_“We have now turned to Governor Monday Okpebholo, our listening Governor, Akpakpo Rescue, and today, June 6th, Hon. Iyamu has reaffirmed that all necessary security measures are now in place to put an end to these nightmares. We believe better days are ahead”._
The meeting between Hon. Bright Iyamu and the elders and stakeholders of Urhonigbe Community underscores the Edo State Government’s commitment to eradicating insecurity in Orhionmwon and the state at large.
In a related development, while speaking at his constituency office in Ugo, Hon. Iyamu reiterated his dedication to the continued development of Orhionmwon-South Constituency. He revealed that completed projects including borehole water systems, solar street lights, and renovated classroom blocks at Adanako Primary School, Ugo, and Ofumwengbe Primary School will soon be commissioned.
He assured the people that more development projects are in the pipeline, reaffirming that:
_“A new Edo has indeed risen in Orhionmwon, a promise of a brighter, safer future for the good people of our Constituency”._
