On Thursday, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) administered a computer-based promotional examination for approximately 6,000 directorate cadre staff under the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).
Candidates in the Federal Capital Territory sat for the test at JAMB’s Computer-Based Test Centre in Kogo, Bwari Area Council.
Addressing journalists at the venue, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed that the examination was simultaneously held for candidates in the United Kingdom, United States, India, and Egypt.
“This is a bold initiative by the Federal Civil Service Commission, driven by visionary leadership,” he said. “Many candidates arrived anxious, fearing the computer interface, but our system is user-friendly. If you can use a mobile phone, you can navigate this exam—it’s simply selecting A, B, or C without needing a mouse.
“The exercise is running smoothly not just in Nigeria but in four countries where we have deployed staff. This will reduce fear of technology. People should confront what they don’t know rather than avoid it.”
He commended the FCSC for embracing innovation and reducing apprehension around digital processes.
Dr. Hussaini Adamu, FCSC Commissioner representing the FCT and Niger State, described the exercise as excellent and a testament to JAMB’s decades of expertise in exam administration.
“Candidates were initially nervous, but once the test began, they preferred the CBT format over the traditional pen-and-paper method,” he said. “The system is transparent, with CCTV monitoring, functional equipment, and a conducive environment.
“We had three sessions yesterday with about 1,500 participants and another three today. With over 500 seats per hall and multiple centres nationwide, the process has been seamless. I commend JAMB for their professionalism.”
FCSC Chairman, Prof. Adetunji Olaopa, noted that this marked the commission’s first use of CBT for promotion exams—a significant milestone.
“It may seem like small progress, but it’s transformative for us,” he said. “We partnered with JAMB, a trusted national institution led by Prof. Oloyede, known for integrity and excellence. Despite initial caution from some quarters, we proceeded with confidence—and the results have exceeded expectations.
“While we recognise the need for nationwide accessibility, innovations must start strategically. Scaling up will require resources, but today’s success lays a strong foundation. Over 6,000 directorate officers participated in this exercise.”
Earlier this year, the FCSC announced the adoption of CBT for promotional exams at the directorate level as part of reforms to modernise Nigeria’s civil service.
The shift aims to boost transparency, accountability, efficiency, and credibility while curbing malpractice—aligning with federal efforts to digitise public service and enhance operational effectiveness.
