By Peter.
French street-art titan JR just announced his most insane project yet: for three weeks in June 2026 he will completely wrap the Pont Neuf — Paris’s oldest and most iconic bridge — transforming it into a massive, walk-through rock cavern in the middle of the Seine.
It’s a direct, full-scale homage to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s legendary 1985 wrapping of the same bridge, exactly 40 years later.
Speaking exclusively to The Guardian in his Paris studio, the ever-sunglasses’d JR called it:
“100 % the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. You’re going to see this gigantic rock formation appear in the centre of Paris. It will be really disruptive.”
The Plan: Pont Neuf Cavern (6–28 June 2026)
- The 232-metre bridge will be entirely draped in printed fabric that looks like a natural cave system
- Visitors will walk inside the “cavern” — the bridge stays open to traffic and pedestrians
- Trompe-l’œil rock textures will make the 17th-century stone arches vanish under a surreal geological illusion
- Hundreds of workers, dozens of engineers, zero public money — all privately funded (“It will cost what it has to cost,” says Christo’s nephew Vladimir Yavachev, who green-lit the project)
Unlike Christo’s nine-year battle with Jacques Chirac in the 1980s, Anne Hidalgo and Emmanuel Macron gave instant approval. Paris police chief too. Zero red tape.
JR x Christo: Full Circle
JR was only two years old when Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped Pont Neuf in shimmering polypropylene in 1985. He discovered the project decades later and says it blew his mind.
“I wished I’d been there to see it. Now I get to create the sequel — and push it even further.”
Christo’s nephew Vladimir Yavachev (who executed the posthumous Arc de Triomphe wrap in 2021) personally chose JR:
“I wanted an artist who grew up in the shadow of Christo’s work. JR was the obvious choice.”
JR’s Track Record of Impossible
- Turned the Louvre pyramid invisible (2016 & 2019)
- Built the world’s largest picnic on the Mexico–US border wall (2017)
- Covered the entire floor of the Paris Opera with 10,000 faces (2024)
But even he admits: Pont Neuf Cavern is next-level.
“People will watch every step. Nothing hidden. The whole city becomes the studio.”
Mark your calendars: 6–28 June 2026 — Paris gets its biggest optical earthquake since Christo.
