1 min read

The convened Vanguard for the Independence of the Judiciary, Douglas Ogbankwa Esq. has called for reforms to improve the Nigerian judiciary, highlighting areas such as technology adoption, access to justice, and judicial welfare.

In a statement issued to mark the 2025/2026 legal year, the group emphasized the need for the judiciary to leverage technology to solve simple problems, such as sending text messages to confirm court sittings or adjournments.

Key Recommendations:

– Technology Integration: Implement virtual court infrastructure and automate court processes to reduce delays and increase efficiency.
– Access to Justice: Make court records and judgments more accessible, and reduce the cost of enforcing judgments and compiling Records of Appeal.
– Judicial Welfare: Improve judges’ remuneration and security, and provide better court infrastructure, including computers and printers in every courtroom.
– Bail Conditions: Standardize bail conditions and ensure that defendants are not remanded without proper justification.
– Transparency: Make the appointment of judges more transparent and subject to public scrutiny.

The group also commended the Nigerian judiciary for its impactful judgments and urged for continued improvement in the delivery of justice.
