Kwara Poly Hit by Rival Cult Violence, One Person Dead

By Ireti Asemota.

A former student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Oyelade Habeeb Olawale, was hacked to death on Tuesday afternoon during a violent confrontation between rival cult groups on campus. The Civil Engineering alumnus (matriculation number ND/20/CEC/FT/206) was reportedly the leader of one faction, targeted in the melee.

Sources indicate the clash erupted over a photo snapped without permission by one group, escalating into arguments and a deadly brawl involving axes. The incident, involving ex-students infiltrating the campus, sparked panic before security intervened.

Swift Response and Arrests

In a statement Wednesday, the polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer, Halimat Garba, described the event as “unfortunate” and confirmed security personnel arrested several suspects, who were handed to police for investigation.

“The Polytechnic condemns in the strongest terms any form of violence and illegal activities within and around the institution,” the statement read. “We deeply regret the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

Management assured normalcy has returned, urging students and staff to resume activities while reporting suspicious behavior. The institution is fully cooperating with law enforcement to ensure justice.

Echoes of Past Violence

This marks a grim resurgence of cultism at the polytechnic, echoing a 2015 clash that killed 16. Authorities have vowed zero tolerance, but the attack highlights ongoing challenges in curbing campus cults amid Nigeria’s broader insecurity.
