Lagos Moves Toward Clean Energy with 22,000 Solar Streetlights

By Peter.

Lagos State has kicked off the installation of over 22,000 solar-powered streetlights under the ambitious Light Up Lagos Solar Streetlight Initiative, aiming to boost nighttime visibility, enhance public safety, and promote renewable energy across Nigeria’s commercial hub.

Announced on December 14, 2025, by the Lagos State Electrification Agency (LSEA)—supervised by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources—the project shifts away from costly, unreliable grid electricity and diesel generators toward eco-friendly solar solutions.

Why the Solar Push? Safety, Savings & Green Goals

LSEA General Manager Kamaldeen Balogun: “This reflects Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to a cleaner, greener, safer Lagos—reducing fossil fuel dependence while preserving the environment.”

Commissioner Biodun Ogunleye: “Not just lighting roads; it’s powering progress and a sustainable future.”

The rollout, executed in-house by LSEA staff for quality control, targets phased coverage—no community left dark.

Lagos lightens environment with 22,000 solar lights

Governor Sanwo-Olu pledged in November 2024: “Within one year, most Lagos streetlights will be solar-powered—advanced models work even on cloudy days.”

This Light Up Lagos drive aligns with Nigeria’s renewable push, slashing emissions and costs while curbing insecurity through brighter nights.

Stay tuned for more glow-ups—Lagos is lighting the way!
