Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has delivered the latest team news ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League showdown with Leeds United at Elland Road, confirming Cole Palmer is ready to start but cautioning that Reece James remains a fitness concern.
Speaking at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference, Maresca revealed the 23-year-old playmaker—who missed over two months with a groin issue and broken toe—is back and available after sitting unused on the bench in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal. However, he’ll be managed carefully:
“He is available. In the last game, Cole was on the bench, but with ten players, it was more complicated for him. The idea is to start giving him some minutes until he is ready to play 90 minutes.”
Palmer’s return couldn’t come at a better time for the third-placed Blues, who sit six points behind leaders Arsenal. His creativity (7 goals, 5 assists in 10 games before injury) could unlock Leeds’ defense, but Maresca emphasized a gradual build-up.
James Management: “We Need to Do the Right Thing”
Captain Reece James, who dazzled in midfield against Arsenal (Player of the Match honors), is unlikely to start due to ongoing minutes restrictions. The 25-year-old has battled injuries all season, and Maresca is prioritizing his long-term fitness:
“I would like to start him, but we need to do the right thing. It’s complicated.”
James could shift back to right-back if selected, with Malachi Fagan-Walcott or Josh Acheampong covering midfield gaps.
Other Absences: Midfield Light, Defense Thin
Chelsea face several hurdles:
- Levi Colwill: Long-term ACL recovery; out until late 2026.
- Romeo Lavia: Thigh issue; sidelined for weeks.
- Dario Essugo: Recent setback after training return; “needs to slow down a little.”
Maresca on Essugo: “He was OK and started some sessions with us, but now he will be out again—hopefully nothing important.” Midfield options include Andrey Santos (ready for his fourth PL start) and Enzo Fernández dropping deeper.
Positive notes: The rest of the squad is “all fine,” per Maresca, with no new concerns.
